In Great Britain, the average daily sitting time is 8.9 hours a day. You sit on your way to work, you sit at work, you sit on your way home, you sit during dinner and you sit watching TV at night. You’re probably sitting down right now as you’re reading this!
Poor workplace wellbeing
The majority of sitting takes place at work. Not everybody has time to go to the gym after work to make up for the lack of activity during the day, and experts say that sitting for hours a day could be harmful, with this lifestyle leading to a higher risk in both mental and physical health issues including obesity, heart disease, backache, diabetes and depression.
Workplace wellbeing in the UK
Research from CABA (a chartered accountants wellbeing charity) found that poor workplace wellbeing in the UK resulted in 58% of the assessed employees suffer from mental health problems, from stress to anxiety and even depression. As well as the obvious risk of burning out, CABA also found that a lack of wellbeing in the workplace decreased productivity by a whopping 63%!

How to improve the wellbeing of your employees
What are employers doing to tackle this?
In a study of over 4.5 million people, 1 in 5 said that their place of work is not doing anything to help improve the wellbeing of the employees, and while 56% of the employers in the same study noted that an employee wellbeing strategy is indeed on their wish-list, they simply didn’t have the right guidelines or resources to implement them.
David English from AJ Products explains, “Studies show investing in the wellbeing of your employees will lead to improved productivity and reduced staff turnover”
Office furniture that increases workplace wellbeing
That’s why there’s a demand for office furniture that encourages activity and increases wellbeing. One supplier filling this demand is AJ Products. They have designed various office furniture to improve wellbeing, including their modern balance stool which has a built-in Pilates ball that can be adjusted with the air pump supplied. Something as simple as this can do a lot to help improve your posture and strengthen your back muscles.
Another one of their innovative products is their Back App Ergonomic Stool, an award-winning balance chair that prevents and relieves back pain, ensures better posture, reduces stress on the body and exercises the back muscles.
Did you know 15 million days are lost in the UK every year due to back problems? David English from AJ Products adds, “There are now numerous studies confirming the negative effect of sedentary lifestyles on our bodies, as well as reduced productivity of business”.
More tips and tricks on workplace wellbeing
Another wellbeing in the workplace idea includes trying to incorporate more movement in the office – whether it be a standing desk or a dedicated space for yoga, allowing ease of access to physical activity encourages your employees to use them more. Introducing things like these have benefits to employers too – you probably already know that exercise releases serotonin and endorphins (which are associated with a positive mood), and studies have found that this leads to an increase in productivity! Other simple ways to improve employee wellbeing in the workplace include encouraging staff to eat away from their desk or allowing them to have a more flexible work arrangement, giving them more time to go to the gym in the morning or participate in other physical activities during their workday.
These are just some basic tactics that workplaces could try to introduce to help improve the mental health and wellbeing of employees.
Investing in the wellbeing of your workplace
David English from AJ Products adds, “UK Business needs to be proactive in looking after the health of their employees, not reactive in dealing with the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. In return, you will benefit from higher productivity and better staff retention. Share in the passion of AJ Products for a healthier Britain, and act now”.
